The purpose of the Department of Forest Ecology is to carry out scientific research and provide advanced teaching based on its disciplines. The Department has chairs in Silviculture, Tropical Silviculture, Forest Tree Ecology, Forest Soil Science, Peatland Ecology and Forestry, Forest Pathology, Forest Tree Breeding, Forest Zoology and Wildlife Management.

The purpose of graduate studies in Forest Ecology is to learn functions of forest and peatland ecosystems during natural succession and how they can be changed by forest management and human impacts. The studies concern the boreal forest zone, including the northern timber line. Studies in tropical silviculture are also available through the section of Tropical Forestry.

The students have a joint major subject in Forest Ecology but they can specialise in any of the nine subjects represented by the above mentioned chairs.
